Innovations and Developments in Concrete.

Perhaps the most widely used building material: concrete. The concrete industry has undergone various developments in the Netherlands and around the world. One of these is the focus on sustainability. Think of innovations such asCO2-neutral concrete and the use of 100% recycled materials. Another important trend in the precast concrete industry is demountability, which adds value to the development of demountable construction. Precast concrete elements are easy to dismantle and reuse, which contributes to a circular economy. BIM4Production® contributes, among other things, to the following four developments in the production of concrete elements.

    Focus on Sustainability

    From the perspective of sustainable use of raw materials, there is a growing focus on producing CO2-neutral concrete. For example, through the use of alternative binders and special types of cement.

    Via the QR code on or attached to the element, or the RFID tag inside it, the composition of the concrete can be traced in BIM4Production®. This information remains accessible even long after the element has been installed. This facilitates the potential reuse of raw materials at a later stage and contributes to circularity.

    New Innovative Production Techniques

    Innovation is also ongoing in the concrete industry. Just think of three-dimensional facade technology or the direct (3D) printing of concrete elements—innovations that open up new possibilities for complex shapes and designs.

    BIM4Production® is based on two industrial principles: Engineering to Order (ETO) and single-piece flow. All information provided to a BIM model during the engineering phase can always be traced via a unique “tag,” both during and after production. By incorporating smart quality control checks into the production flow, quality can also be assured. This allows you to maintain flexibility in your production while fully, quickly, and transparently complying with all current laws and regulations.

    Dismantlability and the reuse of raw materials are becoming more important

    There is an increasing focus on demountable construction. Prefabricated concrete elements are ideally suited for demountable construction. This contributes to a degree of flexibility when buildings change function. It is, however, important to know where the connection points of the elements are located.

    Because each element has a unique position in BIM4Production®, all element details can be quickly accessed—not only during production, but also years after installation. Each element is linked to a document library that includes engineering data as well as 3D and 2D drawings. This way, employees know exactly where the connection and disconnection points are located within the element.
